Abstract:
This paper summarises the current status of the discussion on the integration of high shares of electricity from renewable energy sources into the electricity systems in
Europe. It addresses the different options for increasing the ability of Europe’s electricity systems to integrate high shares of wind and solar energy. Qualitative and quantitative scenarios are derived for the further development of these options and a set of possible indicators for describing the ability of national and regional energy systems to integrate variable renewable energy generation is proposed and discussed.
This paper presents a high-level overview. Its findings are based on an analysis of recent literature and data provided by European institutions. They are further supported by the results of interviews performed with selected experts.
