Status of EuroAirnet at November 2000 (as illustration)
A complete overview on the status of EurAirnet at November 2000 one finds in
EEA Technical report No 90,
"EuroAirnet - Satus report 2000", 20 Feb 2003. The former ETC-AQ carried out an evaluation of the
fulfilment of EuroAirnet criteria for each country, at a country level. The EEA technical report contains
a summary of this evaluation and this web page provides the details on the country evaluations executed.
Brief overview on the EuroAirnet status at November 2000 (EEA Technical report No 90)
Areas and stations
- 29 countries have selected stations for EuroAirnet (see maps: Europe (left), detail of N-W Europe (right)).
- Many of these countries have also carried out a re-evaluation of their selection, based upon the review made by ETC-AQ.
- The selection includes (as of November 2000):
- 451 cities/agglomerations (incl. 40 small towns)
- 113 industrial areas
- 280 rural areas/stations

- Totally 1505 stations, of which about 985 are in urban areas, and 296 in rural areas.
- Distribution of types of stations:
- 466 Urban Background stations
- 388 Traffic(street) stations
- 279 Industrial stations
- 44 Stations in small towns
- 32 Near City Background stations
- 296 Rural/remote stations
Representativeness of current areas and station selection
The present EuroAirnet selection represents an urban population of about 126 mill people (about 56 % of the urban population
in the 29 EuroAirnet countries, see Table 8.4. The total rural population in these countries is about 197 mill, and they are
represented by the 296 rural stations included. There are thus on the average about 126,000 people represented by each urban
monitoring station, and about 650,000 people for each rural station. It is a challenge to devise a methodology for assessing
the exposure situation based upon these data, whether it is to assess the urban population exposure based upon a certain number
of monitoring stations in each city, or whether it is to assess ecosystems exposure.
Compounds measured
Priority 1 compound are:
- for population exposure: SO2, NO2, NOx, O3, PM10, PM2,5, CO, Benzene
- for ecosystems exposure: SO2,NO2,NOx,O3,SO42-,precip ions
- for materials exposure: SO2,NO2,O3,temp,Rel.hum,precip,weight loss,steel panels

Country reports: Meta-data of selected stations - Evaluation of fulfilment - Country visits
The table provides per country access to
(1) tables showing meta-data for the EuroAirnet station selection which has been made in each country, as well as
(2) reports from evaluation of the fulfilment of the EuroAirnet criteria per country, and
(3) reports from country visits.
Please note that this is the status and evaluation as per November 2000. The EuroAirnet selection of stations
have not been modified since then in any country, and this list of stations is for most countries different from
the list of stations for which they are presently reporting data to AirBase.
