Air Quality - Data Exchange Module (AQ-DEM)

Latest release AQ-DEM:    version 15

Introduction on EoI and DEM

The DEM (Data Exchange Module) is PC based software and can be used to Exchange of Information (EoI) on Air Quality (AQ) data (raw data, statistics and ozone exceedances) and meta information on operational AQ networks, stations and measurement configurations.

It is established by the EU in:

In addition EEA set up a data exchange platform for the non EU countries:

The DEM is also fully compatible with the annual data exchange of the:

  • Task Force on Measurement and Modelling (TFMM) of the UN-ECE EMEP

Just like the previous DEMs, the current version provides compatibility with the NASA Ames format used at EMEP. You can submit the EMEP data with the this DEM (see the DEM-manual for details). There is one common data submission deadline set for both the EMEP data and EoI data reporting:     1 October, each year.

Note to data suppliers using the DEM for EMEP data delivery as well:
Previously the deadline for EMEP was also 1 October. However, from 2009 it has been changed into 31 July.
It is still possible to use one DEM to exchange both the EoI and the EMEP data. You can load the DEM first with EMEP data and deliver it before 31 July. After that you continue the uploading process of the EoI data with the same DEM.

The Data Exchange Module enables to:

  • add, modify and delete meta information on AQ networks, stations and measurement configurations; this can be done either on screen or by file entry
  • select station-component combinations for which AQ data is to be exchanged, including subsequently linking of these combinations to AQ data files, and import of these files with extensive error checking
  • manually enter (in addition to file import) statistics
  • check the reported data on outliers, suspicious calculated annual means and missing data
  • visualise imported time series in the form of histograms and line graphs for error checking
  • generate reports with overviews of meta information imported and/or contained in the application
  • generate MS Excel files with DEM meta information (also usable as DEM meta import file), imported raw data and calculated statistics, an overview with imported raw data stored in the DEM, DEM AQ files with raw data (also (re)usable as DEM AQ import file), Google Earth KML files with station positions, XML and NASA Ames export files
  • transmit database through Internet (upload via EEA's Central Data Repository (CDR) or ETC/ACC-FTP) or on a CD-ROM for incorporation in the EEA-ETC/ACC database AirBase and the EMEP/CCC database EBAS.

DEM is pre-loaded with all the meta information on air quality networks, stations and measurement configurations currently contained in EBAS and AirBase.

The DEM supports the following file (import) formats:

  • DEM-format for import of meta information
  • DEM-format for import of raw data and statistics
